Gloomblight Background
« on: May 24, 2010, 03:04:25 pm »
Background thread for a proposed Steampunk RP.

I shall be using my world of Darmonica thats been featured in different guises in a few places, a basic framework to go from. ;)

Background

Nearly a century ago there was a great explosion that ripped through the capital city of the old German Empire, Berlin. This event is widely referred to as the Cataclysm, remembered not for the event itself but for what it spawned; The Gloom.

The Gloom is a poisonous gas that covers much of the surface of Europe and supposedly the rest of the world. There are numerous diseases associated with inhalation of the Gloom. It is said that exposure to the Gloom would easily knock out a person within 2.5 minutes. Prolonged exposure is lethal. Is is given off by invasive fungi that quickly spread in the wake of the Cataclysm and is frequently found amidst the ruins that dot the surface. A few places are where clusters of massive fungi can be found, these areas also happen to be where the densest of the Gloom can be found and are dubbed 'Gloomland'. Gloomlands are often the key points for land reclamation efforts.

Whilst the Gloom is supposedly poisonous to Humans and all other native life, there are reports of creatures thriving in Gloom effected areas. These creatures look like the wildlife that was native to the area in question, though somehow....changed. They look like twisted parodies of the animals they once were and attack on sight, they've been nicknamed the Gloomtouched or the Gloomblighted.

NOTE: The Gloom looks like a gas thats a mixture of fog and smoke, thus giving a dark appearance and its name.

Etherillium

Etherillium is the substance used in the Etherillium Tubes that are used to help repel the Gloom. These tubes work by passing an electrical current through Etherillium which produces pure Ether, something that repels the Gloom and create habitable pockets. Research into this is still ongoing and they've only scratched the surface, though Etherillium Tubes have become widespread and are seen in many a safeheaven on the surface.

The Remnants

Term given to the survivors of the Cataclysm, the sole remaining rump of Humanity.

Many of the old countries still exist in some form of another above the Gloom, either nestled on the top of mountains or floating in a ramshackle cluster of airships. They are mainly concerned with survival and competing for land and resources, though each have their own Reclamation efforts underway to reclaim their lost lands and push back the Gloom. Most maintain a siege mentality, going to great strives to ensure their cities and outposts are heavily fortified and protected against not only the horrors spawned by the Gloom but rival nations as well.

Great Britain exists in a fashion scattered throughout the heights of the Scottish Highlands, the uplands of Northern England, North Wales and Ireland. London, the South East and much of the Midlands remain a Gloom blanketed wasteland despite a number of Reclamation sorties over the years. Efforts have been focused on retrieving the lost knowledge of Cambridge and Oxford universities with expeditions, in recent, years to the ground zero of the Cataclysm in Berlin.

The Reclamation

The process of Reclamation is as follows;

*An easily defensible position close to a source of materials and/or resources is scouted out.
*Military team is then sent into create a fortified position so that portable Etherillium Tubes can be put into place.
*The position or outpost is then cleared and an Etherillium Reactor is installed.
*Rebuilding effects begin to reclaim the position for habitation.

However, sometimes the Gloom fights back....
