Planned 'new-look'
« on: January 02, 2009, 09:22:19 pm »
I might have mentioned it before, but I'm quite interested in designing a nice, custom theme for this site and forum.  I've talked about it before now but ideas really sort of swim around and become distorted when they're just talked about, so I decided to create a mock up in Photoshop, i.e. a picture of the sort of thing I'm talking about.

This is just a picture and a very loose plan, so nothing is set in stone.  I've worked quite hard on it for the past couple of days. Hope you like! ;D

Giving the site the look is so desperately needs and deserves. :)  Hopefully with more space for the forum would free it up a bit (seems a bit cramped at the moment).

Have a good look and tell me what you think. :)

EDIT: The above is a logged out version complete with explanation and footer.  Here is what the logged in version might look like (with shoutbox and all, done in 15mins): http://img230.imageshack.us/img230/8291/vsforumthememockloggedilh2.png

It looks good, but from a practical point of view I'd still prefer to have 3 columns. I like to see the shoutbox and new posts in just one glance - not  have to scroll down to the bottom of the page.

I agree with Magz.
Thedesign is fantastically brilliantly DOCTOR WHO-ish, though!
We are ready. So so ready.

I also agree with Magz, from a practical point of view I prefer to have 3 columns.

I have to say, assuming the recent threads goes up the top, I think it could work with two columns.
I'll need to have a think about it though.  Can we see the site with the recent threads thingumy from the top bar?
(yes, see, I know all the technical terms ;D)

A quick dab of CSS magic could have us with something like this:

This should eliminate the need for constant scrolling.  I can't guarantee it at the moment, but I'll let you know before I start building it.

Quite happy to try it and see how it works... then see what everyone thinks.

Sam - a couple of questions...

On the 'New Threads' drop down menu, would the recently updated posts be highlighted in any way (ie at the moment a little blue dot indicates the newest posts) - because it's not 'live' at the moment, it's just a little hard to tell from the screenshot.

Secondly - last night you were saying that you plan to change the forum.
I take it that the current forum would just be transferred in it's entirety and not actually altered in any way - under this RP section you mentioned?

Also, could you request that Admin takes a complete back-up of the current forum anytime you make any changes - so that no posts are inadvertently lost in the process.

I also hope it'll be iPod/iPhone compatible.

Yup, I'm aiming for it to be similar to the one we have at the moment, indications and everything.

Secondly - last night you were saying that you plan to change the forum.

The basic theory behind this is that the forum as it is has just been added to and added to over time to the point that the forum home page has become rather clogged and un-organised.  This can be pretty daunting to any new users, so the plan is to catagorise everything and re-arrange the forum home page into four comprehensible sections.

Letters in italics are the current names of the sections.

Key:

Section
>Sub-section
>>Sub-section

And so on. It's like a directory/folder tree.

It will be *something* like this:

Site News (Website Stories)
>Technical Questions/Problems (Technical)

Roleplay

>Roleplaying Area

>>Sandbox/Training
>>>UNIT Training (Same name)
>>>Torchwood Training (Same name)
>>>The Sandbox

>>Vote Saxon Roleplay
>>>Current Roleplay
>>>Archived Roleplay
>>>>Vote Saxon Campaign (Same name)
>>>>Who will save us now?? (Same name)

>>Torchwood Roleplay (Torchwood)
>>UNIT Roleplay (UNIT)
>>Alternative Reality Roleplay (Alternative Realities)
>>General Roleplay (The Other Stuff...)
>>"Special Episodes" Roleplay (Specials)

> Roleplaying Discussions (RolePlaying Improvements)
>>Companion Threads  (Out of Character)

Fan Discussion

>Doctor Who Discussion (Combination of 'Gotta love it' and 'After Series Three')
>>Series 4 (Season Four)

>Torchwood Discussion (The 21st Century - It's when everything changes)

>Sarah Jane Adventures Discussion (Sarah Jane Adventures)

General Chit-Chat

Hopefully you can understand what all the > mean! :)  I really think this plus the new themes will give the site the boost that's needed to get it back or at least nearer to its former glory. Comments and critique welcomed as always!  ;D

PS I'll try and get a diagram going to see if I can get the rearranging a little more clear if you like.

I noticed that the shoutbox is now visible to everyone whether they are logged out or not. Personally I think the shoutbox should only be visible once you have logged in.

Please could this be changed back again. Thanks.

I agree, there is no way guests should be able to read the shoutbox, this needs changing back.

Why?  I see no reason not to let our guests (and potential new users) know what an alive and vibrant community we are :D .

+ I don't know what's going on with the Recent Posts module.  I've tried to install alternative ones but it just comes up blank each time.  Whether this is a fault with the system or this theme I don't know. :(
