Decided to try and do a sketch of Lothy as she appears in PNT, used a few pictures as a reference to sort of mix and match. Liking how it has turned out so far.

Something I've stumbled upon by chance, alternative history where the British Commonwealth continues to exist right up to the modern even if on less than friendly terms with the US.

New Forest, Hampshire, 25th November 1863

It was late evening and the Goblin shivered a little under the thin blanket she'd been given, the coal fire had long since died down to mere embers and gave out a feeble glow that left the room in almost complete darkness. Her entire world had been reduced to the wooden bars of a cot turned into a makeshift cage by a blanker tightly tied over it, barring her a means of escape. She seemed to be in some sort of den inhabited by some strange humanoids, the largest of whom frightened her greatly. The smallest humanoid, probably an infant like herself, she had taken a disliking to whilst the female humanoid had proven to be the friendliest of the three and provoked memories of her recently deceased mother.

The large one seemed to have plans for her, though she couldn't understand the tongue they spoke in.

It seemed the humanoids were busy talking, probably not likely to check on her any time soon. In her makeshift prison the Goblin had noticed a gap between the blanket and the top of the bars. She'd tried squeezing through it earlier but the female humanoid had caught her in the act, but know she was in a separate room by herself. Only a small gap stood between her and freedom as she tried squeezing through it again.

"I don't know," Emily mused. "It doesn't seem right to me. Shouldn't we give her to one of those science people? We don't know how to look after her properly. Seems a shame, keeping the little thing all locked up."

Ernest turned the kitchen table upside down and placed it on top of the cot.

"That will keep the little bugger in place." he said.

"I will," Emily sighed sadly as she watched Ernest leave. She prepared a quick breakfast for the goblin and Artie before securing the goblin back in it's temporary 'cage'. Satisfied they were both safe, she changed the sheets of her and Ernest's bed and waited the arrival of Tim.

Title: Re: A Different Life: Path Not Taken

After some food the Goblin perked up a bit, though she whined her displeasure at being stuck in her 'cage' and at Artie poking her continuously through the bars of the cot.

Artie backed down and then wandered off to go play outside, the Goblin grumbled something and gave Artie the evils as he left.

After Emily's first client had left, she went to check on the Goblin and to get her and Artie some lunch. "You know what? You remind me of my Great Aunt Lothy, she was always grumbling and eating us out of house and home too. Drove my poor ma mad, she did." Emily smiled. "I know. I'm going to call you after her. Lothwyn the Goblin, how about that?"

Title: Re: A Different Life: Path Not Taken

Marin let himself out and spoke to Artie who was playing outside, "Your mum's a great lay kid."

"You do sex things with mummy?" asked Artie.

"You bet I did." Martin grinned.

East End, London, 1875

"Any more chores 'fore bed ma?" Lothwyn asked Emily as put put the last of the plates away in the kitchen of the terrace house (http://freespace.virgin.net/rita.uahs/terrace.jpeg) that the Wilsons now lived in. From being a young and frightened otherworldly child when she first came into the Wilson's life Lothwyn had grown over the years into a teenage girl just blossoming into womanhood. She had gotten into the habit of calling Emily 'ma' at a young age when she learned to speak English, mainly because Emily had effectively become a mother to her despite the efforts of Ernest. She'd also had to put up with Artie tormenting her as they grew up together, so she was grateful to have her own room despite how small and cramped it was. Even more so since Artie had started taking a strange interest in her as of late.

She pulled a shawl over her shoulders for warmth before grabbing a broom and heading outside to sweep the yard clear.

Outside Lothwyn shivered in the chilly autumn air as she swept up the few leaves that had found their way into the yard, though she paused to listen to a passing steam train as it travelled along the nearby railway line. But before long she was done sweeping the small yard and eagerly returned to the warmth inside the house. As she came in through the scullery she asked Emily. "Did you want the bathtub made ready ma?"

Title: Re: A Different Life: Path Not Taken

"Yes, good idea," Emily nodded.

Title: Re: A Different Life: Path Not Taken
Post by: Stormwell on May 04, 2012, 01:23:26 PM
Lothwyn nodded and started filling up a copper from the sink in the scullery so that she could have some water boiling as she got down the tin bathtub. Though despite being the one who often boiled the water and filled up the bathtub she was usually the last one to get to use it when the water was barely lukewarm and dirty enough that perhaps taking a swim in the Thames may had been a cleaner option. Being the last one to use it meant it was usually her job to empty and clean it out, though she made sure to boil some extra water which made this last job much more easier.

RolePlaying Discussions / RP Using RPG Rules
« on: February 19, 2013, 01:59:20 pm »
This was suggested a while back but nothing really came of it, but recently I've come across the Savage Worlds system and interested in trying it out.

So, here goes an attempt to roll up a character....in this case Mick.

Step One: Race

Humans are the most common race and in Savage Worlds they begin with a free Edge (more on that later).

Step Two: Traits (Attributes & Skills)

Start with d4 (as in a four sided dice) in each attribute and have 5 points to increase them with, going from d4 to d6 costs 1 point. Max limit is d12.

Agility (dexterity, etc): d4 > d6 > d8
Smarts (how clever you are): 4d
Spirit (willpower, etc): d4 > d6
Strength: d4 > d6
Vigor (aka endurance): d4 > d6

Derived Statistics

Charisma 0 (always 0 unless modified by Edge or Hindrance)
Pace (movement) 6" (every inch equals 2 yards or 6 feet in the real world)
Parry (equal 2 plus half of fighting) 5
Toughness (2 plus half Vigour plus torso armour) 5

Skills work in a similar way, you have 15 points to spend and you have to buy the first rank (aka d4) in the skill. Also the skill goes higher than its parent Attribute you have to spend 2 points per level and the max limit is d12.

Boating (Agility) d8
Climbing (Strength) d6
Driving (Agility)
Fighting/Melee (Strength) d6
Gambling (Smarts)
Healing (Smarts)
Intimidation (Spirit)
Investigation (Smarts)
Knowledge (Smarts)
Lockpicking (Agility)
Notice (Smarts) d4
Persuasion (Spirit)
Piloting (Agility)
Repair (Smarts)
Riding (Agility)
Shooting (Agility) d8
Stealth (Agility) d8
Streetwise (Smarts)
Survival (Smarts) d4
Swimming (Agility)
Taunt (Smarts)
Throwing (Agility)
Tracking (Smarts)

Edges & Hindrances

Unique abilities that round characters out. Edges can be taken by balancing them out with Hindrances, the latter being divided into Major and Minor. You can take one Major Hindrance and two Minor Hindrances, costing 2 points and 1 points respectively.

Hindrances

Overconfident (Major)
Loyal (Minor)
Outsider (Minor)

Edges

Buying an Edge costs two points which you get from taking Hindrances.

Alertness
Connections (Royal Marines)
Steady Hands

Step Four: Gear

Typically have $500 for the starting amount to spend.

Bayonet; Damage Str+d4, Weight 1, Cost 25
Lee-Enfield No.4; Range 24/48/96, Damage 2d8, RoF 1, Weight 9, AP1, Snapfire, Scope

Step Five: Background

Basically your character's history and you're done!

Scribes Corner / A Different Life: Memories
« on: February 05, 2012, 03:18:37 pm »
Weymouth, Dorset, 1948

A black, unmarked Rover 12 made its way through the streets of Weymouth, here and there was the leftovers from the War that ended a scant few years ago. Faded posters were peeling off brick walls, the odd window still remained taped and in places was the all too obvious signs of bomb damage. With France a few miles away and a naval base sat next to it, Weymouth suffered heavily from German air raids and it showed. But there were signs of recovery, bombs were being cleared for new buildings and prefab houses had sprang up overnight to house residents made homeless during the War. Though there was still a substantial military presence in town, warships sat at anchor in the naval base at Portland Harbour and Nothe Fort still played host to a garrison of soldiers including a sizeable amount of Canadians waiting to cross the Atlantic and return home.

Though the driver of the car minded his own business as he drove towards the western outskirts of town, towards Melcombe Regis that was once a town in its own right before being united with its neighbour as a double borough. Eventually he reached his destination, a cottage belonging to a 86 year old widow who had come to the Institute's attention thanks to the recently formed National Health Service. He'd been sent from London to question her and confirm who she actually was, there seemed to be a mystery connected to the old lady that went back over sixty years. It was certainly one of the more unusual cases he'd been assigned to work on, but it was a nice change he'd been looking forwards to. A dark haired teenage girl with grey eyes answered the door. "Yes?"

"Is Mrs Edwards here?" Asked the man as he showed his ID papers. "The Ministry sent me to speak to her."

"Oh, ye mean grandma." Replied the girl. "She's in the sitting room, this way please."

"Of course." Nodded the man and then followed the girl through to a room filled with framed photographs and an old lady sat by a coal fire in a battered armchair and quilt over her lap. The girl introduced the man. "Grandma, this is Mister....?"

"Clements." Answered the man. "Harry Clements."

"He says he's from the Ministry."

"Right, go an' put some tea on please Catherine." Replied the old lady as she stared at the man, just like the girl she also had grey eyes. "Ministry? Wot Ministry?"

"Well Institute actually." Admitted Clements. "I've been sent here to speak to you Mrs Edwards....or should I say Lothwyn?"

"...Mrs Edwards will do just fine thank ye." Replied Lothwyn after she bristled for a moment. "Pray tell, 'ow did ye find me? I mean me an' th'Institute parted ways a long time ago an' I never 'eard 'ide or 'air o' 'em since."

"It was actually a chance find." Clements answered. "You're aware of the new National Health Service, the Institute is using that as a cover to discover exactly who we've got living here. We were notified when your GP sent your medical file and reported some unusual....traits."

"Huh...thought something was up with that doctor." Mumbled Lothwyn as she took in what had been said. "So ye 'ere ta take me back or something?"

"Oh no, no." Clements tried to reassure, then glanced at the framed photographs. "Quite a collection you've got here."

"They're family, or rather memories." Replied Lothwyn. "But thats not why yer 'ere is it?"

"I'm not." Sighed Clements. "I'm just here to chat and help solve a little mystery, the Institute's has actually been curious about what happened to you."

"Tis a long story...."

"Then please tell it, thats what I'm here for."

Bits and pieces of use.

~ ~ ~

The Epsilon Dust Disc (EDD)

The EDD is the equivalent of the Kuiper belt in the solar system, a ring of dust left over from planetary and system formation. It forms a dense ring of dust around the system outside the orbit of the outermost planet. The EDD is massive; Epsilon Eridani has over a thousand times more dust than the Kuiper belt. This means that compared to the Solar System there is a distinct ?fog? of dust debris out past the planets of this system that is much thicker than that in the system that provides a home for Earth. This is obvious to anyone approaching the system and is an important astronomic feature. It has also produced a very high density of comets (for every comet in the solar system, there are hundreds in Epsilon Eridani) and impacts have therefore been intense in this system over its lifespan. The EDD is also a significant hazard for incoming ships. It is dense enough that hitting the EDD at FTL is likely to be unpleasant; hitting a comet concealed within the EDD is unlikely but certainly terminal. Flying at high speed through a massive dust cloud just isn?t clever and to a certain extent the EDD will always make travel to Epsilon Eridani difficult.

Scribes Corner / The Book
« on: May 26, 2011, 03:38:31 pm »
It was a barmy summer's day when I found myself with time on my hands and little to do. I heard about some real gems of a shop tucked away on the narrowed and much more quieter streets of the city away from the main shopping area. Small cafes, old record and clothes shops marked the semi-official boundary between the 'High Street' big brands and the smaller 'budget' shops that were the haunts of students and bargain hunters. Gradually these gave way to buildings that had weathered war and high water only to be seemingly forgotten by time, these were gunsmiths and old fashion tobacconists with grimy signs that read 'H.T. Wilkinsons, EST 1743' from their frontages as I walked past. Though there was a bookshop partially hidden down an alley with lead-frame dusty windows and a frontage in dire need of a lick of paint. It was hard to tell whether the place was still in business since the leather bound volumes (wouldn't be surprise if they were first editions) appeared to have a thick layer of dust resting on their cracked covers.

The door was ajar and so I gently pushed it open to be greeted by a gloomy, oil lantern lit scene of books everywhere on every possible surface. Like those on display in the window, all were leather bound printed decades, if not a century, ago and had a coating of dust. Picking a book at random to flick through with great care I saw that it was a hand written original most likely dating from the early seventeen hundreds, though the subject was something that didn't hold much interest. I found my eyes coming to rest on a large, dark leather journal sat one of the upper shelves. It had a strange glint that I soon realized was a brass lock and lock along with a fastener that held the book closed. Not sure how I I was stood there for, but a voice whispered in my eye. "It draws you in doesn't it?"

Quickly jumping back in shock and crying out in surprise I turned to see an old man, the shop owner I hazard, staring at me. "Sorry, wasn't sure whether anyone was here."

"Tis fine sir, you're the first customer I've had all day....most folk just pass on by without a second look."

"I see, now the book...."

"Five pounds sir." The man replied, sucking on his teeth a little.

"I didn't say that I would buy it."

"Ah but you had the look sir."

"....Look?" I mumbled back. "Can't say I follow."

"The book interests you, more than any other that surrounds us both does it not?"

"Yeah....I does, though I expected the asking price to be much higher."

"Five pounds is a small price...."

"Very well, five pounds it is." I replied pulling out my wallet and a half crumbled note as my mind calculated possibly how much it was actually worth and how I could get selling it on. The man smiled as he took my money and handed over a brown paper bag to slide the book into, though I swore I almost heard him mumble, "....for a deposit."

In hindsight I should have pressed him about the comment, but at the time I just dismissed it and departed with my latest purchase in hand.
